MODs
MOD files are kind of a blend between MIDI and digital audio files. The files specify information such as when notes are played, but the instruments can use samples that are embedded into the files so the sound is more conistent from computer to computer. To find some MOD players/editors (also called "trackers"), try out some of these links.
Soundcards
